Nobody posts a number, and there is a reason
Search junk removal pricing for Edwardsville or Belleville and you get a wall of pages that say "affordable" and almost none that say a number. Homeowners notice. Price opacity is the loudest complaint in every public thread about hauling — louder than scheduling, louder than damage, louder than anything else.
Some of that is legitimate. A truck job is priced by how much room your material takes up and how hard it is to reach, and neither of those is knowable from a search box. Some of it is not legitimate, and is simply a tactic: get the truck into the driveway first, discuss money second. Our position is the honest middle — explain the math out loud, show what other people report paying, then quote your specific job from a description and photos before anyone lifts anything.
What people publicly report paying
Real numbers do exist, scattered across public forums instead of price pages. Everything below is what other people have publicly reported paying, in their own words, with the source named. None of it is our rate — every job here is priced individually after we see it.
Start with the closest regional data, from the Missouri side of the metro. A homeowner trying to get a gun safe out of a basement wrote on r/StLouis:
"I got a quote from one junk removal company for $750 which is way more than I would like to spend & another said they won't do it at all for fear of messing with plumbing."r/StLouis
Same thread, after shopping it around, the same person came back with a very different outcome:

Underneath, another commenter offered a number and got corrected:

Dump fees are the part outsiders forget. Disposal is a real line item on every load, and any number that ignores it is a number somebody will lose money on or quietly work around.
Partial-truck figures from elsewhere land in a familiar band. From r/Langley, two different loads, two very different results:

Twice the volume for less than half the money, reported in the same discussion. Furniture-specific reports from r/cincinnati show the same shape — a homeowner pricing a sofa and loveseat said "$400-500 is the range I'm seeing for something of this size," while another in the same thread remembered paying "$300 ish for our couch removal a few years ago."
One job, three quotes, a four-hundred-dollar spread
The clearest illustration of why shopping matters comes from r/Calgary, where someone priced an identical job with three licensed companies sending two-person crews:
"had 3 different quotes, all three companies are licensed and insured. Same job, 2 men who will be doing the work. 1) $1000+ 2) $760 3) $612 Couldn't believe the price difference"r/Calgary
Nothing about that job changed between quotes. Same pile, same crew size, same credentials. Get more than one quote — standard advice for a reason, and no honest hauler should flinch when you say you are doing it. Shopping also removes the pressure moment people describe over and over. "There are multiple junk haulers around but they are pricey. Sometimes it is worth it just to have it gone but be prepared. They will come give you a free quote but once they are there and ready to haul it's hard to say no if you really just want it gone"r/StLouis
Knowing your number before the truck arrives is what makes that moment survivable.
What actually moves the price
Volume, measured as a fraction of the truck
Hauling is sold by space, not by weight and not by the hour. Your material either fills a quarter of the bed or three quarters of it, and that fraction is the largest single input into any quote you get anywhere.
Access, stairs and distance to the truck
A couch in an open garage and the same couch in a finished basement behind a ninety-degree stairwell turn are not the same job. Second-floor apartments, narrow gates, long driveways and tight corners all add crew time, and crew time is money. Say so up front and your quote will hold.
Disposal at the transfer station
Everything we load has to be paid for again on the other end. Transfer stations charge by weight, and dense loads — plaster, tile, wet lumber, shingles — cost far more to dispose of than the same visual volume of empty boxes and lawn furniture. Density is why two half-loads can price differently.
Items that need special handling
Some things carry their own disposal path and their own fee. Appliances with refrigerant, tires and electronics are the usual ones. How a load fraction works
Our truck is measured in quarters, the same way most truck haulers do it. Picture the bed and picture how much of it disappears under your material.
- 1/4 load — a few large items. One couch, a mattress, a fridge.
- 1/2 load — a cleared garage bay, or a small remodel tear-out.
- 3/4 load — a full basement, or a deck and fence pull.
- Full load — whole-property clearing, or a job big enough to need a second run.
Photos are what let us place your pile on that scale before we drive. A wide shot of the room plus a close shot of anything heavy is usually enough.
When a cheap number should worry you
Low quotes are not always good news. A contractor on r/Demolition put the suspicion plainly when someone asked why a debris haul could not be done cheaply:
"Just the junk? $1000+ ... if you get anyone who says they'll do it for $500 or less you better ask for a picture of their truck in line at the landfill or transfer station with your load in the back or its being illegally dumped."r/Demolition
Disposal has a floor. When a quote drops below what the tipping fees alone would cost, the material is going somewhere it should not, or the operator is uninsured, or both. Homeowners have also started fact-checking donation and recycling claims by contacting the named charity directly, and sometimes finding no relationship at all. Ask where your load is actually going, and expect a specific answer.
The DIY comparison is legitimate
Plenty of loads should never go on a hauler's truck. A rental trailer and a dump run, a roll-off container for a long project, or a free listing that gets the item taken off your driveway are all cheaper than hiring a crew. Hiring makes sense when you cannot lift the thing, cannot get it out of the room, or cannot borrow a truck. Someone on r/StLouis described a seven-foot couch that "would be a huge hassle for my spouse and I to try to get it to the curb on our own." Physical reality decides this, not willingness.
